Drone detected. Now what? This episode was recorded in German.
Drones are becoming a growing challenge for the protection of critical infrastructure. But even when a drone is detected in time, a decisive question remains: how do we actually respond? After a longer break, Holger Berens and Manuel Bohé are back together to discuss the topics currently occupying the security world. This time the focus is on drones, critical infrastructure and how we respond to a threat once it has been detected.
In this episode of “Der wilde Ritt durch die Security”, the two discuss the limits of today's drone detection and why technical solutions alone are not enough. Modern drones pose new challenges for conventional detection systems – for example when control no longer relies on the usual radio links. At the same time, once a drone has been detected there is often very little time to assess the situation and respond appropriately.
This is where the next problem begins: who is actually allowed to intervene? Manuel and Holger discuss legal responsibilities, possible countermeasures and the question of what responsibility operators of critical infrastructure can or must take on themselves in the future. The problem is not new: around 15 years ago, critical infrastructure operators were already debating how to respond to drones – including the idea of deploying trained birds of prey. In the view of both hosts, a viable solution is still missing today.
The episode is therefore not only about detection and technical countermeasures. Awareness, clear communication and response chains, and organisational measures such as evacuation or lockdown are just as decisive in limiting the consequences of an attack. An episode about drones, critical infrastructure and a central question of modern security: what is the point of detecting a threat if it is unclear how we can respond?
