What can AI in video surveillance really achieve today – and where does it still reach its limits? This episode was recorded in German.

In this episode of “Der wilde Ritt durch die Security”, Manuel Bohé talks to Tolga Ermis about AI-based video analytics, false alarms and what the security industry can learn from the automotive industry. Tolga brings experience from both industries and shows how differently they deal with detection and error rates.

The conversation also addresses an everyday problem in alarm receiving centres: a large number of incoming alarms has to be checked, even though many of them are triggered by animals, weather or other interference. As the number of alarms grows, so does the risk of what is known as operator fatigue.

The two discuss the role AI can play here, why video alone is not enough, and why different sensors, systems and people have to work together. They also look at the shift from pure detection to verification and at how AI can combine information from several cameras and over a longer period of time.

Part 1 focuses on the current state of the technology. Part 2 continues the conversation – including the practical integration into existing systems and a look at further developments.

AI can support security processes and take pressure off alarm receiving centres. What matters, however, is not only how well a single AI model performs. Video analytics has to be embedded in an overall approach that brings together technology, processes and people. The episode shows why this interplay determines the real value AI can deliver in physical security.

🎙️ About our guest: Tolga Ermis has worked with camera technology, video analytics and artificial intelligence for many years. After his studies, he worked in the automotive industry on camera and driver assistance systems, focusing on object detection and AI. He later co-founded the AI security start-up promiseQ to transfer his automotive experience to the challenges of the security industry. Today he is founder and managing director of Corsica Security.
